ASICS Half Marathon – Flash Quotes (Men)

1st – Jack Rayner (AUS) – 1:03:12

On his win:

“I’m feeling absolutely ecstatic. It’s my second time running the half marathon. I did it in 2014 when I was a bit young and a bit silly, so today was a much better outcome. I knew I was going to beat my PB of 69 minutes because I have a lot more training behind me.”

On the competition:

“I knew there was a Kenyan in it as well as Collis Birmingham and Liam Adams and they’re all hard to beat. I was going to wait until the 18km mark before really starting to make a move, but the Kenyan went earlier so I tried to catch up with him for the last few kilometres.”

On his love of the Gold Coast course:

“I love starting in the dark and then watching the sun rise. It was an absolutely lovely atmosphere out there today. Once we hit halfway, there were big crowds cheering which pushed you along.”

On his future plans:

“I’d like to come back next year as well as do a European season.”

2nd – William Chebor (KEN) – 1:03:28

On the close finish:

“That’s how it is, everybody is out there to win.”

On competing at the Gold Coast Marathon:

“I love the people, the course and the weather.”

On his upcoming races:

“I haven’t worked it out yet, maybe I will do a 3000 (metres).”

3rd – Edward Goddard (AUS) – 1:04:07

On finishing third:

“I’m so happy, this was my first proper attempt at the half (half marathon). I did one last year in Sydney (Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon) when I was running around 69 minutes. I’ve worked hard over the last year.

“It’s my third race in three weeks –  a 10 (km), cross-country and this. I’ve been building it up and training has been going well – it’s awesome.”

On building his kilometre load in training:

“Yes, so much. It’s built my confidence.”

On running more half marathons in the future:

“I normally run the 10 (km), cross-country and track. The half marathon is going to feature more in the future. I had so much fun running alongside Collis (Birmingham) and Jack (Rayner). It’s a dream come true.”

On his upcoming races:

“I’ve got the national cross country (Australian Cross-Country Championships) in August and City to Surf (Sydney).”
