Stewart siblings set Garmin Junior Dash races alight

12-year-old Imogen Stewart smashed the Garmin 4km Junior Dash race record crossing the line in 12:48.

The Stewart siblings of Sydney wrote themselves into the record books and marked their names as distance running stars of the future in the Garmin Junior Dash races at the Gold Coast Marathon this morning.

Imogen, 12, and, Kobe, 10, won their respective races in record times to continue a strong history for the family at the Gold Coast Marathon.

Imogen not only won the girls’ division of the Garmin 4km Junior Dash, she was the first finisher overall beating juniors aged up to 14 years.

Her time of 12:48 took an impressive 31 seconds off the record previously held by Katelyn Simpson in 2008.

This was Imogen’s first attempt at the 4km race on the Gold Coast after previously contesting the 2km distance in previous years.

Queensland runners Chloe Randall (13:33) and Eva Parish (13:47) finished second and third in the girl’s race respectively, while another Queenslander Flynn Pumpa took out the boy’s 4km race in 12:54 in a close finish from NSW’s Jack Waide (13:05) with Brock Waugh (QLD) placing third in 13:05.

It was a Stewart double with Imogen’s younger brother Kobe taking out the Garmin 2km Junior Dash in a race record 6:33.

Kobe Stewart won the boys’ Garmin 2km Junior Dash in 6:33, slicing 10 seconds off the previous race record set by Kobi Rutherford in 2011.

The 10-year-old talent finished ahead of second-placed Caiden Macfarlane (QLD) who clocked 6:59 with Alex Christian (NSW) rounding out the podium in third in 7:11.

Analiese Murphy (QLD), 10, won the girls’ division of the 2km race in 7:20 with eight-year-old Grace Campbell (QLD) runner-up in 7:44 and Ruby East (QLD) placing third in 7:58.

Thanks to Kobe’s performance this morning, the Stewart siblings now hold all of the age group records in the Garmin 2km Junior Dash – 5-6 years, 7-8 years, 9-10 years.

The Stewarts are coached by their father Owen Stewart wile mother Belinda Martin also competed this morning, placing fifth in the Southern Cross University 10km Run.
