Today is a special day for the Gold Coast Airport Marathon. It marks 35 years since the first Gold Coast Airport Marathon was held on 2 September 1979 in the Gold Coast suburb of Evandale. The event was initiated by the Rotary Club of Gold Coast as part of a Health Awareness Campaign and quickly cemented its position as the city’s largest community participation sporting event.
Over the past 35 years, the Gold Coast Airport Marathon has facilitated and witnessed some of the greatest moments in Australia’s rich sporting history. These ‘golden’ moments are etched in to the memories of thousands of everyday participants, elite athletes and supporters who have graced our fast and flat course over the past three and a half decades.
But, what would you claim to be the most defining moment in the history of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon?
Is it Silah Limo breaking Rob de Castella’s Australian all-comers record? Was it Western Australia’s Lauren Shelley outsprinting Queensland rising marathon star Roxie Schmidt by less than a second in the famous ‘dual by the pool’ in 2009? Was it Lee Troop returning from injury in 2006 to claim victory in the marathon and becoming the Australian Marathon Champion? Perhaps it was Pat Carroll winning his fourth marathon on the Gold Coast in 1997? How about Australian Margaret Reddan claiming her third consecutive and fourth overall marathon victory in 1986? Or maybe it was Eric Sigmont’s win in the inaugural event in 1979 which won him a trip to the Honolulu Marathon?
In addition to these incredible achievements by our elite athletes over the years, we’re sure that many of you have your own personal memorable moments. Perhaps you ran that elusive sub-four hour marathon personal best? Completed your first half marathon one year and upped the ante to the full marathon the following year? Raised money and awareness for a charity close to your heart? Encouraged your children to run in the Junior Dash? Maybe you were inspired by your children running in the Junior Dash and crossed the line in a race such as the Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge?
Whatever it is, we want to know what your favourite moment of the Gold Coast Airport Marathon is? It could be a personal moment, it could be one of the extraordinary efforts from our elite runners, or maybe, your favourite moment hasn’t occurred yet and is going to happen in July next year.
