
MEDICAL RUNNERS
Events Management Queensland in conjunction with Gold Coast Health are recruiting for medical runners to participate in the 2025 ASICS Gold Coast Marathon. This pilot program will be a first of its kind in Australia, offering an additional level of support for runners in the marathon.
The purpose of a medical runner is to provide immediate assistance to participants in the race and coordinate a response if required with the event medical team. Medical Runners will run in teams of 2 at set intervals across the event. They will receive additional training on identifying runners in distress or deteriorating and providing first aid.
Medical Runners will receive free entry into the 2025 ASICS Gold Coast Marathon, all finisher rewards, as well as basic training and equipment to do the role. Medical Runners must carry their own working mobile phone. Medical Runners must be available to attend one of two training sessions on Saturday June 7 2025 in Robina, at either 8am - 9.30am, or 10am - 11.30am.

PURPOSE:
The role of the medical runners in the ASICS Gold Coast Marathon is to offer an extra level of support and medical assistance to participants. Their main responsibility during the marathon is to respond to any medical issues they encounter, acting as first responders and seeking additional help when necessary. This may include recognising anyone who is deteriorating and provide basic first aid, basic life support and administer CPR where required. They will also coordinate with the event's first aid and medical team.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Medical runners must be registered with AHPRA as a Nurse, Doctor or Paramedic and have experience in critical care within the last 3 years. The medical runners must have experience in running marathons and are able to supply results for review.
NUMBERS REQUIRED:
The medical runners will work in pairs running at pace times 15 minutes apart from 3 hours and 30 minutes to 6 hours. The total required medical runners is 22.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
First aid kit (contents tbc) and medical vest to be provided by EMQ.
Working mobile phone with event's emergency contact number to be provided by the Medical Runner.
PROCESS:
The medical runners, working in pairs, will begin the race at their designated pace.
When needed, they will stop to assist participants. If further assistance from medics or QAS is necessary, the medical runners will contact the number to be provided at training. This phone is monitored by the medical team in race control, who will coordinate the dispatch of the appropriate services.
After assisting a participant, the medical runners will resume the marathon and repeat the process as needed.
