World Athletics Label Road Race

At the beginning of 2014, the Gold Coast Marathon became the first marathon in Australia to be awarded an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), now World Athletics (WA), Road Race Gold Label, putting it in esteemed international company. This label was held through to 2019.

Post-COVID, the 2022, 2023 and 2024 Gold Coast Marathon has held a World Athletics Road Race Label and in 2024 the Gold Coast Half Marathon was also awarded a World Athletics Road Race Label. This is the first time an event in Oceania has held a World Athletics Road Race Label for two separate races within the one event.

Each year, World Athletics awards road race labels to marathons whose organisers have met strict criteria for excellence in planning and delivery. The Gold Coast Marathon met WA’s six main requirements including:

  • Race organisation
  • Course measurement
  • Timing and results
  • Media services
  • Medical provisions
  • Quality of the international field of elite runners

The history-making accolade is a testament to the meticulous organisation of the Gold Coast Marathon, whose organisers pride themselves on their continual improvement and thorough planning to deliver a world-class event to 26,000 runners over two days across eight races.
