Trappett wins Gold Coast Sport and Recreation Wheelchair 10km

Australian Paralympic Gold Medallist Geoff Trappett was a dominant winner in the Gold Coast Sport and Recreation Wheelchair 10km in a time of 28:27.
“It was really good, this is always one of the “go-to” events for all the able-bodied athletes and the wheelchair athletes, the crowd is fantastic,” said Trappett.
“The sun was amazing today and just the whole vibe of the Gold Coast is always worth doing.
“It’s getting tougher by the year. I’m getting older and older and I’m getting sorer and sorer by the end of the race.
“We’ve got some young kids out there today, you’ll see some young kids coming through in the 5km wheelchair, a couple in the 10km wheelchair and really, it’s about getting them into the sport now, that‘s what keeps me going.
“And also my wife is out there running today in the half marathon, so just cheering other people on, as well as what I’m doing out there is fantastic for me.”
Para athlete Sara-Ashlee Tait produced a slick 31:51 to claim an impressive victory in the women’s 10km wheelchair event.
She credited her recent rowing training in her quest to qualify for the 2028 Paralympics as a catalyst for her victory.
“I’ve done lots of training and I know that I’m fitter and stronger than I’ve ever been before.
“So I just needed to trust the training that I did have and yeah it got me through,” she said.
“I’m doing a lot of rowing and trying to get my times down so hopefully I’ll go overseas next year and the plan is to qualify for Los Angeles but I really want to try and get some wheelchair races and road races under my belt as well.”
Wheelchair athletes will be the first off the line on Sunday when the Gold Coast Recreation and Sport Wheelchair Marathon begins at 6:05am local time.
