Gold Coasters are dashing to the start line for this year’s Gold Coast Marathon with the 20 per cent local’s discount encouraging a surge of local entries.
The local numbers have surpassed expectations ahead of the 28 April early bird deadline with international participation also enjoying an early influx of entries.
Gold Coast Marathon ambassador and Olympic marathon legend, Benita Willis said the discount was certainly an incentive but she felt the opportunity to participate in an international event in your own back yard was resonating with locals.
“There are so many running events these days but the opportunity to run on the same course at the same time as Olympians and world-class runners was a great attraction and something that sets the Gold Coast Marathon apart from other events.
“The Gold Coast Marathon is the premier running event in Australia and is renowned world-wide for its fast, flat and scenic course. It’s also the on-course entertainment and crowd support that is something special to experience.
“It’s an iconic weekend on the Gold Coast that really brings the community together and champions a healthy and active lifestyle with a race for all abilities and every member of the family to enjoy,” Ms Willis said.
Pat Yelland (MyFit Kids), Duke and Titus
Gold Coast mum, Kylee Freeman and My Fit Kids coach, Pat Yelland have recruited several youngsters from The Southport School to participate in the Health and Wellbeing 2km or 4km Junior Dash.
“We have a growing team of junior runners so far with quite a few more interested in joining us. We have some fun training sessions with My Fit Kids planned so the children will be well and truly ready for their races in July,” Ms Freeman said.
“There are so many great world-class events in this city but not many you actually get to participate in.
“It’s a great opportunity for our family and friends to get out and active with our children in a fun and friendly atmosphere.”
The 2023 Gold Coast Marathon weekend will also feature the ASICS Half Marathon, Southern Cross University 10km Run, Gold Coast Airport 5km Run, the Health and Wellbeing Queensland 2km and 4km Junior Dashes and the CPL marathon and 10km wheelchair races.
The Gold Coast Double 63.3km event – contested by hardy runners competing in both Saturday’s half and Sunday’s full marathon – will also be contested.
