Brothers Craig and Glen Hendry at the Gold Coast Maratahon
They’ve pounded the pavement in the Gold Coast Marathon to the tune of more than 1600 kilometres over the years but crossing the finish line in 2023 will be extra special.
Queensland’s Craig and Glen Hendry will be the first identical twins to be inducted into the event’s exclusive 20-year Marathon Legends Club and recognised alongside only fifty other Gold Coast Marathoners.
The twins boast a long and happy history with the event having first started running half-marathons in 2003 before tackling their first “big one” in 2004 with no real expectation of running twenty Gold Coast Marathons.
“It’s now a nice tradition,” Craig Hendry said of their pilgrimage to the Gold Coast each year from their homes in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast.
“We used to come down here with our families but now that they’re grown up we always encourage someone else in our friend circle to come on down to do it and we stay down for a couple of nights and really enjoy it.”
Whilst the twins are far from competitive one of Craig’s fondest memories of the marathon was finishing it alongside his brother – a feat only achieved once and according to Craig only because his brother was a little injured.
“Glen is far more dedicated with his training than I am, I just like to get the kilometres done,” he said.
Neither twin has their sights set on the 30-year club at this point, but Craig did suggest they’d keep going as long as they could.
Runners who have competed 10, 20 or 30 marathons receive limited edition running shirts and annual entry into the Legends Club over race weekend where they get to swap running yarns with the likes of marathon ambassadors Steve Moneghetti and Rob de Castella.
