This year’s Gold Coast Airport Marathon (4 – 5 July) will mark 10 consecutive years of Cancer Council Queensland’s partnership with Australia’s leading marathon as its official charity.

The decade-long relationship with Queensland’s leading non-government community organisation in cancer control has resulted in more than $510,000 raised towards cancer research and support services for those affected by cancer.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the strong partnership with Australia’s leading marathon was testament to both organisations’ dedication to making a difference in the fight against cancer in Queensland.

“Our 10 year relationship with the Gold Coast Airport Marathon has been vital to Cancer Council Queensland ensuring the impact of cancer is reduced, in working towards a vision of a cancer free Queensland,” Ms Clift said.

“The fundraising efforts of Gold Coast Airport Marathon participants over the past decade have been invested in vital cancer research, support services, prevention and early detection programs, supporting the 25,000 Queenslanders affected by cancer each year.

“One in three cancers are preventable and with the help of participants running in the Gold Coast Airport Marathon we can make a difference to the lives of many, and provide hope that we can beat cancer.”

Gold Coast Airport Marathon Chairman Kerry Watson said the event’s affiliation with Cancer Council Queensland over the past 10 years has been an integral aspect of the internationally acclaimed marathon.

“The relationship between the Gold Coast Airport Marathon and Cancer Council Queensland, which commenced in 2005, has helped reduce the burden of cancer in the state through awareness and fundraising initiatives,” Mr Watson said.

“We provide our participants the opportunity to dedicate their run to the official charity and raise money towards cancer research, treatment, patient care, prevention and early detection in Queensland.

“To celebrate the significant 10-year milestone we’re encouraging all competitors to support Cancer Council Queensland’s vision for a cancer free future by raising money and awareness through Everyday Hero or donating directly when they enter.”

Cancer Council Queensland also plays an integral role over race weekend by providing volunteers to manage the baggage drop area, wheelchairs to assist those in need at the finish line and sunscreen for all Gold Coast Airport Marathon volunteers.
