Facts & figures of the 2014 Gold Coast Airport Marathon
The first Australian marathon to be awarded an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Road Race Gold Label
The first time since 2006 that the Gold Coast Airport Marathon has hosted the Australian Marathon Championships
More women have been racing at the event than men since 2006 however men still dominate the numbers in the 42.195km race
Japan have recorded the most wins in the men’s and women’s marathon than any other country besides Australia with 17 (six men and 11 women)
372,500 cups are distributed by the 24 aid stations on course across the weekend
60,000+ litres of water are also stocked at these aid stations and distributed across the weekend
Over 2 tonnes of bananas and 2 tonnes of oranges are consumed by competitors across the weekend
2,350 orange safety cones skirt the course to keep our competitors safe across the weekend
6.5 kilometres of crowd control barriers are used to separate our spectators from our competitors to ensure everyone’s comfort and safety
Over 5,000 cable ties are utilised for almost every possible reason you can think of. From securing course signage to emergency shoelace repairs on competitors’ shoes
Over 5,000 Band-Aids are distributed by the medical facilities within the event precinct across the weekend. Blisters are the number one complaint here
We manage to fill four 3m x 3m skip bins of jumpers and shirts left at the start line which are passed onto local charities
Over 1,100 volunteers give up their time to ensure the smooth running of the event
Over $500,000 will be raised for charity
We will field the largest ever contingent of Japanese elite runners, Chinese and Singaporean runners
Along with the largest international field to ever line up waiting for the starter’s gun
More than 60 countries will be represented across eight races over race weekend
145 teams with more than 20 members will be vying for prizes in the corporate, fitness and social teams challenge
41 community groups will assist over race weekend at aid stations, road marshalling and recovery
