Southern Cross University 10km Run – Flash Quotes

Southern Cross University 10km Run – Men

1st – Jordan Gusman (AUS) – 28:42

On winning in race record time (28:42):

“It feels pretty good. I have been here a few years now, so this has always been a target race for me. I won the 5.7km race in 2013, and I’ve looked up to this race always wanting to win it. I was third two years ago, so I’m stoked I got the win.”

On what he puts his win and recent performances down to:

“I ran a 5km PB (personal best) on the track in the United States recently, and having the same coach as the record holder, gave me a lot of confidence. He told me I was in the shape to do it, and when he says something like that, you know it’s true. I went out there and stayed true to form.”

On his future aspirations:

“My long term aspiration would be Tokyo 2020 (Olympics) and short term is Doha (2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships). In the meantime, I’ll try to break the record at the Sydney Harbour 10 (km).”

2nd – Andrew Buchanan (AUS) – 29:23

On his second placing:

“I’m really happy with second place. I had a great race although I was 20 seconds off my PB (personal best). Jordan is a great runner, he was pretty much running solo the whole way, so it was tough. I trained hard for a 30-minute race and it was all worth it today.”

On his love of the Gold Coast course:

“I love coming up here because it’s a good course with nice weather – it’s perfect every year. The Gold Coast always puts on a great event.”

On his future plans:

“I’m on the way up and I’ll keep moving to the top. I will definitely be back next year. I might even try the half marathon.”

Southern Cross University 10km Run – Women

1st – Madeline Hills (AUS) – 32:35

On her preparation:

“I ran the Commonwealth Games up here a few months ago, then took a few weeks off and have been building up to this.”

On her race today:

“Today I didn’t run the 10km a normal way.  I ran a hard 5km, stopped for a second and then just ran home.  Spectators at the 5km probably thought it was a bit strange when I stopped my watch and pulled off to the side for a second.

“My goal was to get on the podium today.”

“Once I got within a kilometre to go I thought ‘I’ve got this’.”

On her plans for the future:

“I’m heading to Europe on Tuesday to do some shorter races and I took the advantage of having some training partners here to do the first 5km with.”

2nd – Marnie Ponton (AUS) – 33:12

On the last 2km of the race:

“Caitlin was ahead of me for the first seven kilometres of the race but I passed her within the last three kilometres of the race, so I was pretty excited as I saw the finish line.”

On her love for the Gold Coast:

“I live in the Blue Mountains so traveling up here for the marathon is such a great escape from the cold. I love the Gold Coast – the weather, the beaches and running at the marathon is something I look forward to every year.”

On her love for the event:

“We’re planning to come back for the marathon next year as a family weekend – my kids and partner are super excited about it. My kids will be old enough to do the fun run so it’ll be a family affair.”

3rd – Caitlin Adams (AUS) – 33:27

On her third placing:

“I really enjoyed the race and executed it as planned. The last two kilometres hurt but I got through it. Today I beat my PB (personal best) of 33:55 by almost 30 seconds and there’s still room to improve.”

On her love of the Gold Coast course:

“Last year I ran my first 10km road race at the Gold Coast Marathon and loved that it was such a quick course, so I had to come back.”

On her future plans:

“I will definitely be back next year and hopefully go for the win.”
