Event Preview – Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge

5.7km Challenge

The Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge on Saturday 6 July continues to be one of the most popular events across the Gold Coast Airport Marathon weekend (6-7 July).

“The pressure is off for this one,’’ says Events Management Queensland General Manager Cameron Hart.

“In this event you can run, jog, or slow to a walk at any stage. Many people choose this event if they are not confident of running the 10km or the half marathon.

“They choose this event because they know there is no pressure to keep running. It is a challenge, a personal challenge rather than a race for a podium place.

“This is a great event for corporate teams to become involved. It is not as serious as other events over the weekend. There is not the same training regime required.”

Mr Hart said the philosophy behind the Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge is as an introductory event to the major marathon races across the weekend and had attracted just over 4000 starters.

“Saturday has a real family emphasis with the Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge and the 2km and 4km Junior Dash races, with a highlight being the Southern Cross University 10km Run,’’ he said.

“The 5.7km Challenge is perfect for families. It is the only event where mums and dads can push prams. Yet they use the same start and finish lines as the elite athletes.

“Of course the home straight is along Marine Parade, beside the spectacular Gold Coast Broadwater. There is no better way to see this beautiful part of the Gold Coast.”

Suncorp Bank Regional General Manager for the Gold Coast, Michael Hall, said the organisation was proud to continue its association with the Gold Coast Airport Marathon as a major sponsor.

“Since we came on board in 2011, the Gold Coast Airport Marathon has become one of the most popular events for our staff and customers here in South East Queensland,” Mr Hall said.

“The great thing about the Gold Coast Airport Marathon is that the program features events for all ages and abilities. Last year we had more than 250 staff participate in the event or volunteer over the weekend and many took the opportunity to enjoy a day out with their family and friends.

“This year we’re looking forward to another fantastic weekend. Our team will be out in force taking part in the events supporting participants through the Suncorp Bank Volunteer Program.”

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is a major highlight on Queensland’s event calendar, attracting people from more than 30 countries and showcasing the Gold Coast as a premier sporting event destination.

This year’s race program will feature the full 42.195km Gold Coast Airport Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon, Southern Cross University 10km Run, Suncorp Bank  5.7km Challenge and 4km and 2km Junior Dash races.

Runners and walkers also have the opportunity to dedicate their run and raise funds for the official charity Cancer Council Queensland or for a charity of their choice.
